Technology Description: | |
Organic contaminants in soil are treated in situ by controlled injection of hydrogen peroxide solution into the contaminated zone via a network of injection wells. The hydrogen peroxide oxidizes contaminants to form less toxic compounds. In some cases contaminants can be oxidized and converted to carbon dioxide. Contaminants amenable to destruction and conversion to carbon dioxide include aldehydes, alcohols, phenols, ketones. Careful control of oxidant injection is required through site observation and monitoring wells.
In situ chemical oxidation is especially applicable to contaminants that are toxic to in situ biological treatment, such as formaldehyde and phenols, and contaminants which are not easy to volatilize by soil vapor extraction or in situ stripping, such as alcohols, higher molecular weight ketones, aldehydes, and phenols.

Performance Status/
Limitations: | |
Performance Status:
This technology has been used to remediate formaldehyde contamination at a railroad emergency, treating the railroad track ballast and soil.
It has also been used to remediate formaldehyde contamination in situ caused by underground pipeline leaks in a chemical plant.
Limitations:
Limited to:
1. Soils with high to moderate permeability
2. Chemicals that are amenable to oxidation by hydrogen peroxide, namely: alcohols, aldehydes, phenols, and higher molecular weight ketones.
Concentration limits are dictated by cost of hydrogen peroxide to destroy the organic contaminants.
