Abstract: | |
Stablex specializes in the treatment and secure disposal of inorganic hazardous wastes. Stablex treats and landfills a wide range of inorganic hazardous wastes. The facility is divided into two primary components: a treatment operation, which encompasses 25 acres, and an adjacent landfill disposal operation, which encompasses 325 acres.
The landfill location is owned by the Quebec Ministry of Environment and consists of seven landfill cells. Each cell is divided into smaller subcells. The landfill relies on a thick clay liner to impede the vertical migration of wastes in the cells. The facility will have adequate disposal capacity through the year 2035. Wastes are delivered to the facility using railcar or truck.
Most inorganic industrial waste streams accepted include: air filters acids, caustics, ash and boiler residues (alkalis), batteries, cyanides, debris, electric arc furnace dust, electrical/electronics manufacturing waste, heavy metals, inorganic waste (containing < 30% oil & grease and/or < to 2,000 ppm VOCs/SVOCs), lab packs, leachate, mercury brines, oxidizers, pickling liquors, and wastewater treatment sludges.
For each waste stream accepted, Stablex chemists use laboratory analyses to develop a sequence of physical and chemical treatments designed to minimize its hazardous properties before the waste is incorporated into an environmentally stable concrete-like product. The stabilized product is then placed in the landfill.
For a waste stream to be accepted at the facility, the waste must be profiled by the generator, analyzed for required parameters, and formally accepted by the facility.
Stablex facilitates the transfer of wastes between the United States and Canada. All paperwork and transportation are handled by Stablex.
